DIGITAL PERM
A Digital Perm is a form of perm in which chemicals are first applied to the hair before it is wound onto curling irons and then heated. Due to the heat applied, Digital Perms are very shape-retaining, and are also called “shape memory perms” in Japanese. Although there are of course individual variations, you can generally expect the shape to be retained for three to four months.
COLD PERM
With ordinary perms (cold perms) no heat is used, the change in shape is created solely with the chemicals. The substances are applied to wet hair, which is then covered. When the hair dries, the shape loosens and softer waves are created.
DIGITAL PERM vs COLD PERM
The biggest advantage of the Digital Perm is its longevity. Due to the high fixing power of the Digital Perm, thanks to the action of heat, its application allows even clients with stiff hair or those with very thick and/or curly hair to enjoy a perm.
Another big difference between a Digital Perm and a Cold Perm is that the final shape can be influenced once the hair has dried. When styling at home, it’s best to use a blow dryer, and twist and twirl the hair as you dry it, as if you were curling it up/curling it. This will allow you to reproduce soft loose waves such as right after a visit to the hair salon.
Recommended styles for clients with a Digital Perm include wavy hairstyles with natural soft waves for medium to long hair, or much curlier styles that look like they were curled with a curling iron. Because the curls from a Digital Perm are created primarily mechanically, the chemical that is used is relatively thin and gentle. Accordingly, the risk that the hair texture suffers or the hair is damaged is low.
Since a Digital Perm requires less subsequent styling at home, you can also omit the daily use of a straightening iron. Therefore, the stress on the hair after the appointment is relatively low, which makes the Digital Perm a very hair-friendly variant of a perm.
The concrete advantages of a Cold Perm, or ordinary perm, are that waves and curls are particularly strong and distinct when the hair is damp. In contrast, the curls loosen a little and become softer and looser as soon as the hair dries. In addition, immediately after the application of the perm, the hair falls in bunches and shines. For those who want particularly wavy hair, damp shiny bundle-like textures or an uncomplicated crinkly-curly look, a Cold Perm is recommended. Men and customers with short hairstyles or the desire for more volume are also well advised to use a Cold Perm. The longevity of a Cold Perm is two to three months, which is a little shorter than that of a Digital Perm. In the case of larger waves, the shape of a Cold Perm can begin to deteriorate after just one to two months. Accordingly, we advise clients with a desire for larger waves to use a Digital Perm. As far as styling of a Cold Perm is concerned, the hair is significantly curlier as long as it is damp. Thus, styling can be done quite easily by first moistening the hair before styling products are used. However, care should be taken that the waves can be dispersed or stretched if the hair is dried carelessly with a hair dryer. Instead, it is best to apply a mousse or styling cream while the hair is still damp, and then blow-dry gently with a diffuser attachment and/or using a fairly weak setting.
As you can see, there are significant differences between a Digital Perm and a Cold Perm. Depending on the hair texture or desired styles, both forms of perming may be more or less suitable. If you are unsure or have concerns about this, feel free to consult with one of our stylists before making an appointment. In addition, in order for perms to last and maintain their shape, it is essential to use the correct salon, care and styling products. If there are any questions about daily care or styling, again, do not hesitate to ask for advice from our stylists.
